There are four types of membership in the Georgia Surgical Society: Active, Senior, Inactive/Out-of-State, and Honorary. Candidacy for membership in the Georgia Surgical Society is by proposal by one member of the Society and sponsorship by two additional members, all of whom must have good knowledge of the candidate. Membership entrance requirements are that a surgeon must be Board Certified in his/her specialty of practice, must have been in practice for at least two years, and must be a practicing surgeon in the State of Georgia. Active members must meet requirements of attendance at the annual meetings and financial obligations of the Society. Senior membership is achieved when Active members reach 65 years of age or have been a member of the Society for 30 years or have retired from practice. Attendance at meetings and payment of dues are not required of Senior members. Inactive/Out-of-State membership is granted, upon request, to active members who have moved out of state but wish to retain membership in the Society. Dues, at a reduced rate, and attendance requirements must be met. Honorary membership may be awarded to outstanding surgeons who reside outside the State of Georgia and have participated in or contributed to one of the annual meetings as a guest speaker or may be awarded to recognized surgeons who have retired from active practice and presently and permanently reside in Georgia. Membership information is further outlined in
Article III of the Constitution of the Society.
